Berkeley Humane’s Aloha Dog Project Welcomes 125th Dog from Hawaii

Moke to be celebrated at Bark (& Meow) Around the Block on August 29

BERKELEY, CA, UNITED STATES, August 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Berkeley Humane is proud to announce an exciting milestone for its Aloha Dog Project. During Bark (& Meow) Around the Block on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the organization will welcome its 125th dog from Hawaii, a special pup named Moke.

Launched in partnership with animal welfare organizations in Hawaii, the Aloha Dog Project gives adoptable dogs from Hawaii a second chance by transporting them to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they have an excellent opportunity to find loving homes.

Kona’s public animal shelter serves the entire island and can quickly become overwhelmed with adoptable dogs. Through Berkeley Humane’s Aloha Dog Project, tourists and business travelers volunteering as flight escorts help transport these dogs to Berkeley Humane, where they receive comprehensive medical care, behavioral support when needed, and the opportunity to begin a new chapter with a loving family.

“What began as a pilot program has grown into one of the most rewarding collaborations in our organization’s history,” said Jeffrey Zerwekh, Executive Director of Berkeley Humane. “Welcoming our 125th dog from Hawaii is a testament to the power of partnership, community volunteers, and the belief that geography should never determine a dog’s chance at finding a loving home.”

Every dog arriving through the program receives vaccinations, a microchip, spay or neuter surgery, a thorough medical evaluation, and any additional treatment needed before being placed for adoption. Depending on each dog’s condition, the cost of preparing an animal for adoption can range from $2,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on their medical needs.

The Aloha Dog Project is made possible through the dedication of volunteer flight escorts, generous donors, and the strong partnership between Berkeley Humane and the County of Hawaii Animal Control and Protection Agency and the nonprofit animal sanctuary Three Ring Ranch. Since its launch, the program has provided a fresh start for dogs here in California while helping relieve overcrowding at Kona’s shelter.

Moke, the program’s 125th dog, will be introduced during Bark (& Meow) Around the Block, Berkeley Humane’s annual community adoption event and celebration taking place on Saturday, August 29. To mark the milestone, families who adopted previous Aloha Dogs are being invited back with their dogs for a special reunion to welcome Moke to Berkeley and celebrate all 125 dogs whose journeys began in Hawaii. The gathering will bring together members of the growing Aloha Dog family and offer a powerful reminder of how one lifesaving partnership has created lasting connections between Hawaii and the Bay Area.
Bark (& Meow) Around the Block will bring together animal lovers, adopters, volunteers, supporters, shelters, and rescue organizations from throughout the region to celebrate the human-animal bond and help more animals find loving homes.
